CDR DICOM ® for Windows ® is our new digital radiography software based on the international standard for digital imaging communication known as DICOM. Built on standard concepts in networking, the DICOM standard provides extensive information for manufacturers developing DICOM-compliant products and for users seeking to understand DICOM's design. The language of the standard, which will likely be more familiar to data administrators, can be difficult, but the growing influence of DICOM here in the U.S., and already in Europe, is undeniable.
DICOM, itself, is more than just a type of image format — it is a standard protocol that describes images so they can be transmitted, retrieved, stored, and displayed. This is also true of related data (patient information for example) that must be structured in such a way that it can be understood correctly by the hardware and software that receive it. To accomplish this, the DICOM standard adopted an object-oriented design, which continues to evolve and refine as the emphasis on practical, secure, and reliable implementations becomes predominant.
DICOM applications offer data communication solutions between diverse products and different manufacturers — an increasingly common, often necessary outcome. A conformance statement, prepared by the manufacturer, provides important information about the product's compatibility with the DICOM standard. Although they should not be the sole resource in selecting hardware and software, conformance statements do serve as tools for buyers seeking DICOM solutions and for implementors assigned to accomplish them. (Our own conformance statements can be found here.)
CDR DICOM will be shipped as a free upgrade to all customers under warranty.
